Waste from Refugee Flows
The materials left behind by refugee flows vary and may include blankets, clothing, life jackets, plastic boats, wooden boats, boat engines, etc. These materials arrive at the factory mixed together, are weighed, sorted from general waste, and packaged for further processing (e.g., washing of blankets for reuse, exploring ways to recycle boats and life jackets, clothing recycling, etc.).
To date, 25 tons of clothing and blankets have been collected and directed towards recycling or reuse. The blankets were sorted, washed in industrial machines, and are now ready for reuse.
Additionally, 3 tons of life jackets (approximately 2,000 pieces) and 15 plastic boats, each 6 meters in length, were collected. These items were sorted, packaged, and stored for further management.
Using its own trucks and machinery, the company also contributed to the removal, dismantling, and recycling of 6 semi-sunken steel boats from the island’s coastline, with a total weight of 70 tons, supporting the efforts of the Municipality of Lesvos.
