Corporate Social Responsibility
The benefits of Corporate Social Responsibility are a priority for AEGEAN RECYCLING S.A., given that the company’s work itself has a serious social impact. It is obvious that the removal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste from the environment results in a safe and healthy society.
However, the company’s responsibility towards the local community does not stop here but also extends to educational activities.
More specifically, AEGEAN RECYCLING S.A. has signed and is implementing environmental education programs in collaboration with the Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of Lesvos for a series of school visits to the company’s facilities with the aim of informing and raising awareness of students on recycling issues.
This program has started since 22-1-2009 and is still ongoing with an average of one visit per month.
Collaborations with Educational Institutions
Participation in educational programs of Universities and the continuous information of students from the schools of Lesvos on the importance and work of recycling is a strategically important goal of AEGEAN RECYCLING – FOUNDRIES SA and is part of the priorities of the administration.
For this purpose, cooperation has been initiated with the Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education of Lesvos for a series of visits of schools to the company’s facilities with the aim of informing and raising awareness of students on recycling issues. This program has started since 22-1-2009 and is still continuing with an average of one visit per month.
Regarding the collaborations with Universities in programs that promoted waste recycling and their use in production processes, the following surveys have been carried out to date
Collaboration with the University of the Aegean (Department of Environment) and the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs, in an internship program for undergraduate students of the department on recycling issues. The duration of the program was from 25/06/12 to 06/08/12 and from 01/07/14 to 31/08/14. The program was funded 75% by EU funds and 25% by national funds.
- Collaboration with the University of the Aegean, Department of Research and Development of the Department of Environment, with the NCSR Demokritos and the University of Crete, in carrying out dust and gaseous particle measurements from 23/08/13 to 01/09/13. The research was funded by the company.
- Collaboration with the University of the Aegean, Research and Development Department of the Department of Environment, in investigating the possibility of utilizing recycled glass in the production of anti-slip pavement with a mixture of aggregates and glass. The research lasted from May to November 2013 and was funded by the company.
- Collaboration with the University of Athens, Department of Geology and Geoenvironment in the preparation of a study on the recycling of PV cells and OTKZ crystals, funded by the NSRF program “New Innovative Entrepreneurship”, lasting 9 months with own participation of 40%. The contract with the University of Athens was signed on 15/10/12 and the goal was research for further utilization of secondary raw materials that will result from the recycling of photovoltaic panels and OTKZ crystals
Health and Safety
Ensuring occupational health and safety is a top priority for AEGEAN RECYCLING-FOUNDRIES S.A. With prevention as its main focus, the company makes continuous improvements to its health and safety programs by investing in the latest recycling technologies, accident prevention methods at work, protective equipment and other preventive measures.
Specifically, the company has taken the following actions:
- has contracted with a private doctor who visits the unit every month
- During work, employees are equipped with all the personal protective equipment (masks, gloves, work shoes, glasses, helmets) provided for
- The company recently activated a group health insurance program, initially for 10 employees, in collaboration with ALPHA Bank, which concerns annual check-ups and diagnostic examinations through PEDYY, dental benefits, etc.
- All machinery and trucks are periodically maintained according to the manufacturer and a maintenance book is kept for each one. In particular, the machinery used by the employees (clacker – shovel – trucks with cranes – lift for OTKZ – air stations) are certified and checked by the labor inspectorate PDEYA E. Piraeus – Attica – Aegean (Chios safety and health department).
Also, awareness and training seminars are held in a factory hall with the help of audiovisual media. There, under the guidance of the safety technician or the production manager, the employees are informed about safety issues in the recycling of hazardous waste, about issues of implementing the factory’s environmental policy, about the conditions and obligations arising from the regulations that the company has adopted and applies and other issues related to waste management.
Our people maintain a strong sense of responsibility in health matters and actively support the company’s efforts to improve hygiene and safety conditions at work.
